About Zulu Rose
ZULU ROSE® dares you to escape into a world where bold color, exotic patterns, vibrant graphics and refined tailoring are the norm. The exotic backdrop for this premium line of men’s and women’s lifestyle products reminds us that ZULU ROSE’S primary aspiration is to beautifully, thoughtfully reconnected us with the style, fashion, and cultures of Africa in a fashionable way.
Head designer, Alexander Derrick, ventured into fashion after having spent 7 years as a successful lead artist at MTV and Universal Interactive. Derrick started experimenting with print making and using traditional African garment decoration techniques and coloring methods on clothes in 2004. He has slowly evolved his own personal aesthetic based on his travels and a fusion of his lifelong interests in Abstract Art, African Art, Pop Graphics, computer graphics and his own Haitian and Moroccan heritage.
The ZULU ROSE® project continues to expand. From it’s humble beginning as limited editions for Derrick and his friends, to servicing trendy boutiques such as Pieces in Brooklyn, Apartment 3 in Los Angeles, Cantaloup in Manhattan, Essex on Melrose, Collage in Venice, and the Furaha Boutique in Tokyo. In 2006, London born, dance and fashion icon Wunmi Olaiya (see Soul II Soul) joined forces with ZULU ROSE® to add her own creativity to the ZULU ROSE formula. In 2008, ZULU ROSE fully relocated from Los Angeles and is now completely manufactured in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
The line continues to evolve and is still hand printed and finished by the designer on premium fabrics to harmonize the graphics with the organic traditions and concepts that inspire them.
The ZULU ROSE® line consists of the experimental, luxurious, couture ZULU ROSE® Origins collection, and the lower price point and entry level tee-shirt line ZULU ROSE® BOOTLEG collection.
The ZULU ROSE BOOTLEG concept is an introduction to contemporary African style and fashion. Our motto is DO IT “FOR DA PEOPLE!”
