Legends of Afrobeat - Film

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Finally, a documentary on pop West-African dance music from the 70s, also known as Afro-Beat. A music that is far wider in scope than just FELA KUTI and TONY ALLEN. Although Baba Fela Kuti and Tony Allen are the icons of the era, there were scores of other musicians doing some funky stuff in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Togo, etcetera.

DOUBLE U-O GLOBE (an asian film maker?), appears to have a film in the works that looks like it might tell the story of Afrobeat music without simply glorifying Fela.

Check the trailor and then the website.

itunes picA colorful mix of jazzy vibes. Starting Pharaoh Sanders having fun over an Osunlade electronic beat and working all the way back into a more mellow totally analog rootsy white label Africo-jazz rare groove.

-Enjoy

Gwotet - Osunlade Ft. Pharaoh Sanders
Nigerian Juju Highlife - Pharaoh Sanders
Tornados vs. Dynamos - TP OK Jazz
Sweet Mother - Prince Nico Mbarga
Ekedi - Manu Dibango
Unknown West African Rare Groove

p.s. Just got back from Los Angeles and picked up some of my favorite records and CDs that were collecting dust in my storage.
Can’t wait to dig into some of those records.
